National Award for Gloucestershire Horse Trails Project
GLOUCESTERSHIRE County Council's Public Rights of Way Team have been presented with the British Horse Society's Access Achievement Award for their support in the creation of a new network of horse riding trails across the Forest of Dean district.
The routes, part of the new Forest of Dean Greenways project, link up new and existing public rights of way with Forestry Commission tracks to form a series of inter-connected circuits for horse riders,
cyclists and walkers.
The award recognises the County Council's contribution to the project which has been devised and led by the Forest of Dean and District Horse Riders and Carriage Drivers Association, a small group of local
volunteers established to improve equestrian access across the district.
Principal public rights of way officer John Lane said: 'This award recognises all the hard work that has been done by this project to make sure that horse riders feel welcome in Gloucestershire and to
ensure that they get the access rights they deserve.'
Jenny Carling, chair of the group of local volunteers behind the project added: 'We are very grateful for the support provided by John and his team in the creation of a the forest of Dean Greenway which has
been designed primarily for local riders but which will also be of great benefit to tourism and the rural economy of the Forest of Dean district.'
